Candelilla wax is secreted by the leaves of a shrub native to northern Mexico, Euphorbia cerifera. It is very rich in long-chain hydrocarbon compounds and high molecular weight wax esters. This composition makes it a very hard and brittle wax with a relatively high melting point (70°C). These properties are highly valued in the production of cosmetic makeup products, particularly lipsticks, where it facilitates unmolding, and mascaras, where it improves drying time and staying power. This wax is also known for its excellent film-forming properties, making it very useful for protecting chapped lips.
