The Benzoate & Sorbate Complex is a synergistic blend of two synthetic preservatives approved for use in organic cosmetics, providing optimal effectiveness against bacteria, yeasts, and molds. Its aqueous solution formulation makes this preservative very easy to use and dose. Sodium benzoate and potassium sorbate are salts of organic acids that occur naturally in many plants, notably cranberries and benzoin resin for benzoic acid, and rowan berries for sorbic acid. These organic acids possess antimicrobial activity; therefore, an acidic pH (4.5–5.5) is important for the preservative to function effectively.
